How to Create an Effective Affirmation

by Sonya Baity Wierbiki – Certified Life Coach, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master and Spiritual Counselor (Bodywork Fusion Affiliate)

Affirmations are more than just “feel-good” phrases we repeat to ourselves. They’re vibrational tools – any frequency tuners that can shift the way we think, feel, and magnetize what we want.

But here’s the catch: an affirmation only works if it feels good when you say it. Emotion is the electricity that makes your words light up your reality. Let’s start with the basics.

An affirmation should be:

  1. Positive Focus on what you want, not what you’re trying to avoid.
  2. Present tense. Speak as though it’s already happening.
  3. Personal. It has to resonate with you.

Say you don’t want to feel exhausted after work. You could flip that thought into something like: “I feel peaceful and at ease as I finish each day.”

Notice how that statement feels softer – and more believable – than “I’m exuberant and productive after work!” The goal isn’t to force excitement; it’s to find the words that your body and energy system agree with.

Your affirmation should make you smile from the inside out. If it doesn’t, tweak it until it does.

The Feel-Good Factor

Sometimes we think we need big, fancy words to sound spiritual or powerful. But simple and general phrases often carry the strongest vibration. Try statements like:

“It is easy to be happy.”
“The Universe is always working things out for me.”
“I always know when to slow down and care for myself.”

And if affirmations still feel awkward at first, start smaller – make a list of words that lift your spirit: peaceful, vibrant, generous, inspired, joyful, creative, grateful. These words are your emotional building blocks.

Why Affirmations Work

Affirmations reshape neural pathways and align your frequency with what you desire. When you repeat them with emotion, your subconscious starts to expect that reality – and the Universe mirrors that expectation back to you.

So the real magic isn’t in the words themselves, but in the feeling those words spark.

Try It Now

Take a breath.
Think of something you’d like to shift – health, happiness, self-worth, abundance.

Now say this out loud: “I am open to feeling good about this.”

If that one lands easily, you’ve already begun the process. If you’re ready to do more with this now, make a list of the areas you would like to soften in your life, and start creating new positive statements to change that energy.
